New Day Nursery at Cheltenham’s Historic Lexham Lodge

New day nursery at Cheltenham's historic Lexham Lodge

SF Planning secures approval for a new day nursery at Cheltenham’s historic Lexham Lodge

SF Planning has achieved planning permission, listed building consent and advert consent to convert Grade II listed Lexham Lodge in Charlton Kings, Cheltenham, into a day nursery, addressing the high demand for childcare in the area. Acting on behalf of Berkhampstead School, our proposal combines respect for heritage with innovative solutions to meet modern educational needs.

The planning strategy for the project involved various stages, beginning with a Certificate of lawfulness for the change of use of the former NHS facility.

Meeting Local Demand

The upcoming day nursery aims to ease the shortage of nursery spaces in Cheltenham, particularly in Charlton Kings. With their main nursery operating at full capacity since 2012, Berkhampstead School identified a growing demand in the community, motivating them to expand and offer more early years education services in this historic setting.

Balancing Heritage with Modern Needs

Lexham Lodge, a Grade II listed building within the Cudnall Street Conservation Area, will undergo careful alterations focused on preserving its unique historical character while adapting it for safe, effective nursery use. Plans include internal enhancements, such as a sensory room and a variety of other child-friendly facilities. In addition, external improvements to enhance safety are proposed, including secure fencing. Minimal external changes are planned to ensure the building retains its historical charm.

Enhancing the Community Space

Beyond childcare services, the new nursery will create about 50 local jobs, contributing to Cheltenham’s economy. The plans also include a dedicated forest school area on-site, promoting biodiversity and offering children an immersive outdoor learning experience.

Preserving Heritage While Building for the Future

The proposal respects the architectural and environmental significance of the Lexham Lodge grounds, ensuring that improvements align with the building’s heritage value, and is an important example of the role planners play in balancing Cheltenham’s growth with heritage preservation.
